Kaleidescape

A couple of weeks ago on the monthly visit to my audio dealer, I got a chance to sit in their theatre room and see this awesome box in use.

The Kaleidescape system consists of a DVD server, a DVD reader and a movie player. This allows you to view any movie in your DVD collection on any television that has their movie player attached to it. Up to 660 DVD movies on one system, and it's of course, daisy-chainable to support more servers. It will play the movie from the central server over an ethernet connection. Currently it plays 480i and 480p formats, with 720p and 1080i formats to come.

It's a very sexy and impressive system, and one I can foresee occupying a space in my future home! The design reminds of SGI's old systems and logo, and I wonder if it may have been inspired by that.
